私のサイトに訪れる方の半数が、「ニュージャージー州、治安」で検索してくる方です。
私が旅行したのはコロナ禍前の２０１８年でしたので、最近の治安はどうか友人にも聞いてみました。
ニュージャージー州は全米の中では比較的治安が良い州とされていますが、都市部と郊外で差があります。
暴力犯罪（人口10万人あたり）
- 殺人件数：4.31件（全米26位）
- 婦女暴行：11.40件（全米最下位＝少ない）
- 強盗：138.41件（全米9位＝やや多め）
- 加重暴行：154.27件（全米39位）
財産犯罪（人口10万人あたり） - 窃盗事件：2,150.73件（全米47位＝少なめ）
- 侵入盗：490.16件（全米36位）
- 自動車盗難：197.42件（全米28位）
暴力犯罪の中でも婦女暴行の発生率が非常に低く、これはまだ安心材料になりますね。
一方で強盗の発生率はやや高めなので、都市部では注意が必要です。
強盗など財産犯罪は全体的に全国平均より低く、郊外では比較的安全な生活が可能です。
夜間や早朝の外出は注意が必要。人通りが少なくなる時間帯は、どの都市でも犯罪リスクが高まる傾向があります。
ホーボーケン駅周辺は歴史的な雰囲気があり、映画のロケ地にも使われるほど魅力的ですが、こちらも夜間は慎重に行動するのがベターです。
州全体としては、地域によって治安の差があるため、滞在先や移動ルートの選び方が重要です。

- Rape: 11.40 (lowest in the U.S. = low)
- Robbery: 138.41 (9th in the U.S. = slightly high)
- Aggravated Assault: 154.27 (39th in the U.S.)
Property Crime (per 100,000 population) - Theft: 2,150.73 (47th in the U.S. = low)
- Burglary: 490.16 (36th in the U.S.)
- Motor Vehicle Theft: 197.42 (28th in the U.S.)
Among violent crimes, the rate of assault is very low, which is reassuring.
However, the rate of robbery is slightly higher, so caution is required in urban areas.
Property crimes are generally lower than the national average, making life relatively safe in the suburbs.
Caution is required when going out at night or early in the morning. The risk of crime tends to increase in any city during times when there are fewer people on the streets.
The area around Hoboken Station has a historic atmosphere and is so attractive that it has been used as a filming location for movies, but it's still best to tread carefully at night.
As for the state as a whole, safety varies from region to region, so it's important to choose your accommodation and travel routes carefully.
