Introduction to Shibamata, Katsushika Ward
If you're looking for a compact area in Tokyo where you can experience the traditional downtown area, I definitely recommend Shibamata in Katsushika Ward. It's very convenient, about 30 minutes from Ueno Station.
Shibamata, Katsushika-ku, Tokyo, is a historic area that flourished as a temple town for the Taishakuten Daikyoji Temple. It is especially famous nationwide as the setting for the popular film series "Otoko wa Tsurai yo," and is loved by many people as "Tora-san's hometown."
Shibamata was the first area in Tokyo to be designated as a nationally important cultural landscape. Its unique urban structure, which developed as a temple town centered around Taishakuten Daikyoji Temple, and its atmospheric scenery based on traditional livelihoods are still carefully preserved today.
